A hard and long road to glory

The idea of establishing Karelian Adventure Sports Club yields all the way back to year 2001 when the founder members, Mika Okkonen and Heikki Lehmus, were competing against the very best of the best in an adventure competition called Karelian Odyssey. A beautiful awakening to adventure sports had happened!

Karelian Adventure Sports Club (friends call it just Karsu) has been arranging adventure sports competitions since 2002. The competitors have experienced changing landscapes of Nurmes, Ruunaa, Koli and Joensuu.

Members of Karsu participate adventure sport / multisport competitions held around Finland and abroad. Some of these races have been more successful than others.

Adventure sport

What is adventure sport?
Racers of an adventure sports competition are moving forward with a man power and utilising the forces of nature. The aim is to get from one place to another as soon as possible making as little mistakes as possible. In summertime an adventure sports competition normally consists of running, mountain biking, canoeing and something special such as swimming, roller skating, climbing etc. In wintertime usually skis, snowshoes and kick sledges are used to amuse competitors.

Adventure sports competitions can last only couple of hours or even many days. The length of the route can vary from tens of kilometres to hundreds of kilometres. The landscape is changing constantly under one competition and racers’ physical abilities will be challenged time after time.

A team participating in an adventure sports competition should be mentally and physically in good condition. Success asks for skills with different sports and adaptability to changing circumstances.

Depending on the length of the race some accessories are essential. A short competition one gets through with basic things, but for longer trial also special accessories need to be bought. The most expensive single purchase is a mountain bike.
